New Member Press Release – MarViva Foundation
International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification welcomes MarViva Foundation as a new affiliate member, joining a team of partners working to increase ambition for climate action and transform response to climate-ocean change.
It’s with excitement and great pleasure we announce that MarViva Foundation has joined the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification (OA Alliance.)
The OA Alliance brings together governments and organizations from across the globe dedicated to taking urgent action to protect coastal communities and livelihoods from the threat of ocean acidification and climate-ocean change.
Affiliate members commit to elevating the issue of ocean acidification in keeping with their mission and capacity. Affiliate members engage as supporters of the Alliance and where possible, join events and programmes that help advance the Alliance goals.
“It’s an honor to have MarViva Foundation join the OA Alliance. Affiliate members bring expertise and in-region experience to identify information that help governments and communities respond to climate-ocean change. Affiliate members also help us reach new audiences and actors, further advancing our shared goals.”
Jessie Turner, Executive Director of the OA Alliance
By joining the OA Alliance, MarViva will be advancing the following goals:
Advance scientific understanding of ocean acidification.
Expand awareness and understanding of ocean acidification.
Build sustained international support for tackling this global problem.
Specifically, MarViva will be part of an informal stakeholder group of research universities, NGOs and government institutions across Latin America engaged in the co-design of an Ocean Acidification Policy Communications document for uptake by national governments across Central and South America, with an emphasis on Pacific Rim and Caribbean regions.
MarViva Foundation is working on the project "Fostering Climate-Resilient Biodiversity and Fisheries in Eastern Tropical Pacific MPAs". The project aims to establish essential information to create management strategies that are resilient to climate change for the marine conservation corridor of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (CMAR). The project explores the impacts of climate change and the dynamics of pH, OMZs in the ETP. It also projects distributions of marine fish under climate change, incorporating climate change into the modeling framework as well as into the management of MPAs. Advancing scientific understanding, as well as expanding public awareness.
"Through collaboration with scientific institutions, we can strengthen our technical foundation and enhance our efforts in policy advocacy and communication, ensuring that climate change and marine conservation remain intertwined in all our strategic initiatives."
Katherine Arroyo Arce, Executive Director, MarViva Foundation.
The OA Alliance and its network of members actively engages across the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda (particularly under SDGs 13 and 14) and is supporting the development of OA information through the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainability.
