Communicating OA to Policy Makers with the IAEA

The OA Alliance was invited to curate content and present four days of programming “Communicating OA to Policy Makers” at an OA Communications Workshop hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s International Ocean Acidification Coordinating Center which took place Nov 14-24 in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The communications workshop brought together 12 scientists from Malaysia, Philippines, Greece, Argentina, Peru, Panama, Brazil, Greece, Cabo Verde, South Africa to discuss their goals, challenges, and existing tools to support communications about and understanding of local or regional OA efforts.  The OA Alliance director and communications lead generated presentations, worksheets, interactive discussions, and role-playing exercises to support the workshop.

OA Alliance modules included:

  • Putting OA in Context for Policy Makers

  • Talking About OA as an Action Taking Issue: Moving from Knowledge to Action

  • Developing Calls To Action on OA

  • “Operationalizing CTAs” by Shaping Requests for the Right Recipients

  • Communicating OA Needs to Policymakers: Taking Inventory

  • Q&A with Scientists and Policy Makers: Engagement with Decision-makers and Policy Making Bodies

  • Role Playing and Troubleshooting

  • How to Evaluate Success of OA Communication Goals and OA Actions

Two worksheets were created for the workshop to help participants take inventory of their needs or goals and develop strategies for communicating OA activities to policy makers. Moving forward, the OA Alliance will develop these modules into official curriculum available for use by OA Alliance members and partners.
